Staying overnight at school

The huge snowstorm that moved through the Midwest caused some students at a Colorado school to be stranded.  A bus carrying about 60 students ranging in age from pre-school to 12th grade turned back to school when a road was closed due to bad weather.  The older students slept on gym mats covered with coats and the younger students used nap mats.  It's a small school where they all know each other and some are even related so it was just like a sleepover.  They watched movies, had concession stand pizza, played basketball, and talked by phone with their parents before going to sleep.  stranded students

Guns for tickets

Michael "Blue" Williams wants to trade concert tickets for guns.  Not just any concert tickets but ones for Beyonce's Mrs. Carter tour.  He's raised most of the money he needs to make the project work, the NYPD is on board, now all he has to do is get Beyonce to agree.  He thinks young people would be more willing to get the tickets than the cash program that is currently in place.  His project would be supplemental to that one.  getting guns off the street

NASCAR loses a great fan

But Mitch Zannette wouldn't have it any other way.  He died in the infield at Daytona three days before the Daytona 500.  After doctors gave him just days to live, he decided that he wanted to see the race.  He checked himself out of the hospital and headed to Florida with his partner, Tammy, his son, Mitchell, and his brother, Joe.  They made the trip in a rented RV.  Mitch enjoyed every minute of his last days; meeting one of the Sprint Cup girls, walking on the beach one last time, visiting the garage area, and even managing to talk his way trackside during the short track races.  His favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt Sr. and his family is convinced that he is now in heaven spending time with Dale.  dream fulfilled

How many sheep and men can fit in a small car?

Police in New Zealand did a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle.  The small car contained 10 sheep and 4 men.  It's a very hot day and that many in a car will create a lot of body heat especially when most of them are dressed in wool.  It was discovered that the sheep were stolen from a nearby farm.  They were returned unharmed but a bit shaken.  The men were arrested.  10 sheep and 4 men
Update:  11 sheep

Mindy McCready's dog

Why did Mindy McCready shoot her dog before shooting herself?  Experts say that it was probably out of love rather than anger that she did it.  The dog actually belonged to her late boyfriend and she may have wanted the dog to be "with her."  Two other dogs at her home were unharmed.  dog

First female pit crew member

Christmas Abbott has always been tough and that should suit her well as she tries to excel in an all male sport.  She will debut her talents in the Camping World Truck series in the pits for Jennifer Jo Cobb.  She'll also do a job shadow in Clint Bowyer's pit at the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 24--this may lead to a job on a Sprint Cup car for Michael Waltrip Racing.  Christmas

Two years in prison for letting teddy bears in

A border guard in Belarus was sentenced after a Swedish plane parachuted teddy bears into the country.  He was sentenced because he failed to report the border crossing of the plane that dropped the teddy bears containing pro-democracy messages.  Bolarus and Sweden expelled each other's diplomats over the incident and two civilians were arrested as well.  One was a journalism student who put a picture of the bears on his website and a landlord who offered an apartment to the two Swedish pilots.  All this over teddy bears?  attacking stuffed teddy bears

Danica Patrick

On the pole for the Daytona 500 is Danica Patrick.  She makes history by being number one to pull off the line on Sunday--she's the first woman to ever do it in NASCAR's Sprint Cup.  Because of getting the pole, Danica will not have to run in the Budweiser Duels.  CC106.3 carries all of the Sprint Cup action.  Danica

Sad day for Country music lovers

Mindy McCready was found dead yesterday.  She apparently commited suicide after killing her dog.  Her father had been staying with her after the death of her boyfriend last month and the subsequent removal of her children from her home.  When he left Sunday morning, he says that Mindy was finally in good spirits.  I loved her music and will be singing some of her songs in her honor this weekend.  She was a tortured soul--rest in peace Mindy.  Mindy McCready
Please remember that suicide is a long-term solution to a short-term problem--it's not worth it!

Two students in jail

The two boys concocted a plan to kill a fellow student by stabbing her.  They say that their reasoning behind the attack was that she bullied them.  One boy planned to kill her with a knife and the other would stand guard with a semi-automatic handgun to keep anyone from stopping them.  These two boys were only 10 and 11!  Both Washington 5th graders are in a juvenile detention center.  murder plot

Cops need lessens in identifying pot leaves

Bonnie Jonas-Boggioni aged 65 and her husband were traveling home to Texas from Columbus, OH after attending a funeral.  They're big Buckeye fans and have the team's sticker on the back of their vehicle.  Cops in Tennessee apparently don't know the difference between a pot leaf and a buckeye leaf.  Bonnie was pulled over for suspicion of trafficking drugs because drug dealers always advertise what they're doing (insert sarcastic giggle here).  traffic stop

Dogs helping cats

Cheetahs may be the fastest land animal but they're not very social creatures.  This is causing a decrease in the cheetah population.  So dogs are being used to help the big cats survive.  The cats now have protectors and are starting to breed more in captivity.  friends of cheetahs

Cruise ship stranded

No, it's not an old story...another cruise ship is stranded in the waters by Mexico.  The Carnival Cruise ship Triumph had an engine fire that caused it to become stranded.  No one was injured and another cruise ship is on-hand to deliver supplies.  A tug boat will tow it to a port in Mexico.  Carnival Cruise adrift
Update:  The ship was not able to be towed to Mexico because it had drifted north.  It is now underway to Mobile, Alabama.  It should reach it's destination by Thursday and passengers will be staying in hotels until the cruise line can fly them home.  Conditions are not good aboard the ship and those on the ship are hoping for Thursday to arrive quickly.  news about Triumph

Chris Christie

Former White House physician for Bill Clinton, Connie Mariano, has caused a stir with Chris Christie.  She made comments about his weight and health without ever even meeting him.  She says that she is concerned that he would die in office if he were elected.  Kudos to Chris for telling her where to get off!!  Chris' response

Turning tragedy around

The Garretts are a blended family.  She has two sons and he has three daughters.  Then they had a son together.  Unfortunately at 7 months, Jake passed away.  In her grief, Sherrill, was looking for something to help her through it.  A friend was talking with her about 15 years from now she would be wondering who Jake's prom date would be.  This gave Sherrill an idea.  She remembers her own prom when her mother had to have a dress made for her because they couldn't afford a fancy dress from the store.  Thus, "Dresses for Jake's dates" came into being.  They will loan all the necessary items needed for prom to any girl that needs them.  prom dates

Monopoly

Voting ended last night before midnight and Hasbro is scheduled to announce the new Monopoly token this morning.  We'll also find out which one will disappear from the game.  People from 120 countries were involved in the voting.  The shoe, the wheelbarrow, or the iron will be eliminated.  It will be replaced by a diamond ring, a guitar, a cat, a helicopter, or a robot.  I'd like to see the cat.  new token
UPDATE:  The iron is gone and the cat is in!!

Using beer to make beer

For a brewery in Alaska it is way too expensive to prepare and sell the waste from making it's beer.  So, instead, they are using their own by-products to make more beer.  They should be able to save $450,000 per year.  beer
