recycling gone wrong

Some states have a can and bottle fee tacked on to the price. That fee is returned when the container is taken to a recycling or redemption center. The problem occurs when out-of-state containers are returned for the refund that was not paid with the purchase. It seems that some people; recyclers included; are getting rich from this scheme. Maine has decided to crack down on this practice. A couple of recyclers and an individual have been charged with fraud. The recyclers are accused of accepting bottles and cans that they knew were purchased out of state and the individual is accused of returning about $1000 worth of ineligible containers. story
