watch seal giving birth

The birth of the baby seal was caught on video from the security cameras at the marina.  Harbormaster Brian Kaloper noticed the seal on Monday morning when he came to work and wondered why it was in a highly traveled area when he realized that she was about to give birth.  He's uploaded the video to youtube so that others could witness the miracle.  video

missing ring

LeLonnie Alexander lost her ring while on vacation.  It slipped off her finger when she slipped in the water near the Ocqueoc Falls in Michigan.  She posted on facebook in desperation hoping that someone might find it.  Caden Gersky was heading there in a few days for his very own vacation and he decided to take a snorkel and goggles with him.  He was certain that he could find the ring and that's what he did.  After returning the ring to LeLonnie, he was rewarded with $200.  found ring

beer house

John Milkovisch didn't believe in throwing anything away.  He knew he would always find a use for it.  Thus, his house became covered in beer cans.  It made for a very interesting aluminum siding.  His house is now being preserved and the public is allowed to tour it.  beer can house

fat shaming doesn't work!!!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it over and over again.  Fat shaming does NOT work.  When are people going to realize that when they think they're "helping" someone by picking on them about their weight, it's really doing more harm than good?
Now there's a study proving just that.  Read about it and stop the shaming.

best wedding RSVP

A Chicago couple has a great sense of humor.  Their RSVP card for their wedding gave guests (attending or not) a chance to give reasons for their decision.  Katie Kerr and Chris Sabino just wanted to have fun with it.  Here's the text:

Yes! I will be attending because…

-Two words: Free. Booze.

-I’m in your wedding party, idiot. Wait, is this optional?

-This is my only chance to play golf at Medinah & I plan on sneaking off during the toasts to play a quick round.

-I would never dream of missing it! After all, knowing the Kerr/Sabino Family (circle one) this should be a night full of must-see fun/drama/ridiculous dancing (circle one)!

No. I won’t be attending because…

-I’m lame. On a scale of one to ten, my lameness would be in the 9.5 to 9.8 range.

-I’ll be watching the Cubs win the World Series

Edit: these options are meant to be circumstances that could actually happen.

-I will be visiting, um, Yemen. Yeah, Yemen. But it’s a secret trip. So if you ask anyone, they will have no clue what you’re talking about.

-I don’t know who you people are or how you got my address. Leave me alone! (Oh, and congrats on your upcoming nuptials.)

Taylor Swift

After a concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Taylor Swift went out to dinner with her entourage.  She dined at Ralph's Italian Restaurant and paid her $800 bill, left a $500 tip, along with some tickets to an upcoming concert. She had to leave through the back door because word of her being there had gotten out.  dinner for Taylor

Heinz catsup is the best.  Now I have proof.  Several catsup's were taste tested and checked for nutritional value.  Heinz got it for taste and wasn't too far down on the nutrition scale.  Heinz is best

another dog and kitten pairing

A shelter worker discovered a Shih tzu nursing a kitten.  The dog refused to leave the kitten so they both had to be rescued.  Both were taken to a shelter and housed together.  The dog had a collar and tags but no one came to claim it.  Now both animals are living together.  dog and cat

frozen foam

It's very difficult to keep a beer cold when at an outside function.  Add to that, the fact that the beer costs way more than it's worth and it seems like a total waste of money.  Frozen foam to the rescue.  The foam is dispensed like soft serve ice cream and can keep beer cool up to a half an hour even in 80+ degree weather.  beer foam

Jake Owen

A go-cart accident shattered the bones in Jake Owen's hand.  He was at a party and went go-carting on a track in North Carolina afterwards.  He was going about 40mph when he flipped the go-cart and then flipped back over.  He ended up having surgery and can't do things he normally does like hold his daughter or play guitar.  But he's a trooper and he's already back on tour.  Jake's accident

Glee will go on

Lea Michele is ready to join the Glee family and get back to work.  The show will only be delayed by a week.  Finn Hudson's character will die in an upcoming episode--Ryan Murphy is carefully writing that episode now.  Life goes on and the show must go on.  Here's hoping the Glee cast can heal together.  Goodbye Finn/Cory

Schoep is gone

John and Schoep gained fame last year because John would take Schoep out into the water and let him rest.  The water would hold Schoep up and give him some relief from his aches and pains.  A friend took a picture of the two and it went viral.  I have the original story right here on my blog--it was so touching that an owner would go that far for his furry family member.  Unfortunately, Schoep has passed on but at least his last year was better for knowing John.  Schoep the dog

The hate group Westboro Church is at it again.

It's not a church...that word does nothing to explain what the Westboro mob is all about.  They praise God for deaths...sounds like satan's a part of that group.  They are now planning to protest at Cory Monteith's funeral because he was on a show that supported gays.  What the hell is wrong with these people?  Westboro hate group

She picked up a hitchhiker

Maybe her parents didn't tell her not to pick up a hitchhiker because Emily Kraus saw a guy on the side of the road and decided to give him a ride.  She was on her way to a Dave Mathews concert when she passed Dave Mathews on the side of the road.  He had been out on a bike ride prior to the concert and the bicycle got a flat tire.  Luckily for him, Emily had a bike rack on her car.  In return for her kindness, Emily got the royal treatment at the concert which included backstage passes, dinner with the star, and front row seats.  flat tire on bicycle

The intern that gave out the wrong names of the pilots on the Asiana flight that crashed in San Francisco has been fired.  The NTSB announced the firing after backlash came from the wrong names being broadcast on an Oakland TV station.  The wrong names were very racist...Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow.  Asiana Airlines has said that they will sue the station for defamation of character.  wrong names

Twinkies are back

Hostess cakes went back on the shelves on Monday.  Not only are they back but they're super Twinkies--the shelf life has been increased to 45 days.  If Twinkies fans have anything to do with it, they won't stay on the shelves that long.  Cupcakes, Ding Dongs, Zingers, Ho Hos, and Donettes are back as well.  Hostess

new table has hole

A family in Texas bought new furniture and brought it home.  Much to their surprise, a beetle chewed it's way out of the table.  They caught it, put it in a plastic bag, and stored it in the freezer until the U.S. Department of Agriculture could pick it up for identification.  Luckily the store returned their money and let them return all of the furniture they bought.  Another beetle was found in the table but not in any of the stores other furniture.  beetle from China

Stores are tracking you

Enter a store with your smart phone or even walk by, and the store can track you.  Some tracking systems are so sophisticated that they can distinguish if you're male or female.  They also know how much time you spend in any area of the store and what your path is.  Some stores may send coupons to your phone while you're in the store based on things you look at.  Big Brother is watching

Note in a bottle

It happens all the time.  A note is found in a bottle...sometimes thousands of miles away and years later.  This time the bottle didn't travel far but it did take years to arrive.  A 10-year-old girl, named Sidonie, threw the bottle into the ocean 12 years ago.  It was recovered in some debris from Hurricane Sandy in the little seaside village of Patchague, NY.  On the note was a quote from 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure,' "Be excellent to yourself, Dude."  That was Sidonie's favorite movie.  The note also included a New York City phone number.  At the other end of that phone line was Fery, Sidonie's mother.  She explained that Sidonie had died after falling from a cliff in Switzerland when she was only 18.  Fery will travel to Patchague to retrieve the bottle and attend a ceremony in her daughter's honor.  note in a bottle

country video goes viral

A gay country singer, named Steve Grand, is enjoying some internet fame after his video goes viral.  It's about a guy who has a crush on his best friend.  But the best friend has a girlfriend.  I've seen the video and it is very tastefully done.  It left me wondering if boy gets boy.  great video

4-year old mayor

The tiny Minnesota town of Dorset has only 22-28 people at any one time.  They don't really have an official form of government so anyone can be mayor.  Each vote costs $1 and when voting ends, a name is drawn.  That person becomes mayor for  a year.  Bobby Tufts won the election last year when he was only 3 and is running for re-election.  4-year-old mayor

abandoned dog has two "babies"

A chihuahua was found outside an animal shelter over the July 4th weekend.  She was in a box nursing two babies.  A police officer found the three animals and took them so they could have food and water.  What he discovered was a dog and two kittens.  The dog is taking good care of her two "babies."  They've been taken to an animal rescue group which promises not to separate them until the kittens are weaned.  good mom

Comedy in Winona at Bub's

I don't usually stay up later than 7 because I have to be at work so early in the morning but last night was an exception.  A friend took me to Bub's in Winona for dinner and a comedy show.  It was my birthday treat.  I knew my morning would be rough if I stayed up but it was so worth it.  Mark Liedel opened and Shane Maus (a native of LaCrosse) was the headliner.  It was a great night of a lot of laughter.  Bub's is doing it again on July 26. www.Thenoisyneighbor.com

It's so hot, you could fry an egg on the sidewalk

For residents in Oatman, AZ, that's more than a saying.  They have an annual festival that brings tourists to their town in the 100's.  That may not seem like many but to a town of 135, it's massive. The contest is simple, cook an egg by only using solar energy.  Some bring aluminum foil, others bring complex solar contraptions, and everything in between.  The eggs are broken at noon and by 1pm it's all over.  The best looking egg wins.  fry an egg

Singing helps

For those with breathing problems, it seems that singing is the answer.  Learning to sing helps with control of lung functions and for those with breathing problems, that is a wonderful thing.  A hospital in London has started singing classes and even though they don't have an evidence that it works, those who have taken the class say that they feel much better because of it.  singing

31 NASCAR teams face penalties

The roof flaps of 31 NASCAR teams were confiscated after inspections.  The flap spacers were illegally filed down to reduce weight.  After the 16 Sprint cup car violations were found, the inspections focused on the Nationwide garage and 15 more violations were found there.  All had to put legal roof flaps on their cars before they were allowed to practice.  NASCAR violations

In Virginia...it's illegal to buy sparkling water?

Elizabeth Daly had just purchased a 12-pack of St. Croix sparkling water, some cookie dough, and some ice cream.  She was heading for her car when agents from the state's Alcohol Beverage Control division thought she had just purchased beer.  They jumped on her car and pulled guns.  None of which were wearing uniforms or showed any recognizable identification.  Elizabeth and her friends were so scared that they drove off and called 911.  In doing so, she grazed two of the agents with her car.  She was pulled over later and had to spend a night in jail.  water not beer
