saying goodbye

Dante was a faithful companion to officer Christopher Coscia.  He was a state trooper from Massachusetts and Dante was his K-9.  Unfortunately Dante had pulmonary hypertension and it was incurable.  His brain was being suffocated and after having seizures, Christopher knew it was time to end the suffering.  But before the trip to the vet, Dante got an 8-hour final ride in the cruiser.  goodbye

promise

A drunk driver put 7 year old Mikey in a persistent vegetative state.  Mikey's father vowed that no matter how long Mikey was here on this earth, he would include him and always be by his side.  That promise was kept for 31 years.  He was always present for family functions, vacations, and speaking engagements.  Thanks to Mikey's family, he had a full life.  farewell Mikey

A german shepherd has adopted a baby lamb.  The lamb was rejected by it's mother so the Karakas family in Missouri took it in.  The dog and the lamb developed an instant friendship and are inseparable; playing together and cuddling.  The lamb turned 5 days old on Saturday.  lamb and dog

Zoo rock star

Blakely has a very important job at the Cincinnati Zoo.  The Australian Shepherd was chosen specifically for the job and was adopted at 8 months old.  He babysits baby animals that have been separated from their mothers for various reasons.  He teaches them how to drink and socialize so that when they are put into the population, they have a proper knowledge of how to act.  Blakely can teach the animals things that humans can't.  Blakely

Bieber arrested for DUI

Justin Bieber was arrested for drag racing and DUI in Miami Beach, Florida.  He was in a rented Lamborghini at the time of the arrest but no other details yet.  He's underage, drinking, and driving too fast.  Makes it difficult to believe him when he says:

"I'm a good person and I have a big heart.  I love God, and I'm grateful for the blessings he has given me. I don't plan on
wasting the opportunity."

The Mars rover Opportunity has taken a picture of a rock about the same size and shape of a doughnut.  It even has a red center.  Without driving over the spot, Opportunity took pictures 12 days apart.  In the first picture, there was no rock; but it mysteriously appeared in the second photo.  rock

Left out of the Olympics

Chloe Kim is one of the best snowboarders but she will be left out of the Olympics even though the team would be much better with her.  The problem is her age.  Chloe is only 13 and the minimum age for the Olympics is 15 by the end of 2013.  too young

Cool Runnings 2

Against all odds, the Jamaican Bobsled team wants to go to the Sochi Olympics.  They've qualified for the two-person bobsled race but don't have the funds to go.  They're taking donations on Paypal, selling a book on it's history, and hope to raise what they need.  They're also hoping that Jamaica's Olympic Association will help as they do with other teams. jamaican bobsled team

diets don't work!!

How many times does that have to be said before people realize that it's the truth?  The weight-loss industry doesn't want you to know this because it would mean they would lose income.  But their products just don't work.  Dieting can actually be very unhealthy for you.  It's time to stop giving the weight-loss companies our hard-earned money.  stop buying

Sister Wives

The new season has started for Sister Wives.  It airs on Sunday nights and is a favorite of mine.  The Brown family had filed in Utah against the state's polygamy laws.  A judge has ruled in favor of the Brown's.  Their hope is to eventually move back to Utah so that they can live their lives without the threat of prosecution.  The Brown family

One Last Round

Rusty Wallace raced hard at Daytona for testing.  He got back into the #2 car for one last round.  His 192 mph put him in fourth for qualifying at the time of the run.  Not bad for someone who hasn't been in a Sprint Cup car since 2005.  Rusty

send email...go to jail

Thomas Gagnon was sent to jail and had to post a $500 bond because of an email sent to an ex.  She had a restraining order so when she got the email from him asking her to join Google+, she went to the police.  Thomas was arrested for violating the order.  He claims, however, that he didn't send the email; that in fact it was Google sending an automated email.  jailed

forget your pants?

It all started in New York 12 years ago.  In 2002 the US group Improv Everywhere started the "No Pants Subway Ride."  It has now grown internationally with more than 4,000 taking part in New York alone compared to 7 for the first pantsless ride.  the rules of the ride

Rusty returns to the #2 car at Daytona

Rusty Wallace isn't coming out of retirement.  He's just doing some testing at Daytona but it was nice to see him back in "his" car.  According to Rusty, it all started out as a joke but grew into reality and he's very pleased.  Brad Keselowski was very proud to share the car with Rusty.  test drive

Pizza place delivering more than pizzas

Tom Wynkoop owns a pizza place so he's used to making deliveries.  With the cold weather, Tom decided to help his community.  He posted on the company's facebook page offering to deliver medications to anyone who needed them.  He pleaded with people to NOT venture outside and there was no food order required.  He helped about a dozen residents.  What surprised him is that he started receiving donations from people in other states.  Not knowing what to do with the unexpected money, he decided to match the funds and donate to Meals on Wheels because those folks were out delivering in that cold weather too.  delivering

Free at last

The ships that have been stuck in the ice in Antarctic are finally free and moving through thinner ice.  A Russian ship with scientists, crew, and other passengers got stuck in the thick ice and had to be rescued.  A Chinese ice breaking ship came to their aid but couldn't reach them.  They got stuck in the ice after using their helicopter to transfer the passengers to an Australian ship.  The US Polar Star was on it's way to help but has been released since the two ships have begun to move on their own.  rescue complete

how to raise a duckling

Spongi thought he was raising chickens when he took care of some eggs.  He found out that one of them was a duckling.  Without others ducks to socialize with, Spongi took on the task.  He raised the duckling by letting it nest under his beard until the weather changed.  Then the duck would become a free range duck and Spongi would feed and shelter it just like his chickens.  lucky duck

goodbye to an Everly Brother

At 74, the younger brother of the duo, Phil, has passed away.  The two are credited for starting the British invasion.  Phil's last performance was about a year ago when he recorded himself singing "Silent Night."

Another sad day in the music world.

Stranded

This time it's not a cruise ship...people are stuck in Barbados because of the snow storm that hit New York.  I can think of worse places to be stuck especially with the cold we're facing here.  Some of the passengers won't get home for a week and JetBlue isn't paying for any accommodations.  That's their policy for weather related delays.  stuck in paradise

great white

What do Minnesotans do when it's really cold and they have lots of snow lying around?  They make a giant shark.  Three brothers in Minnesota spent 95 hours constructing the shark in their front yard.  sculpting talent

new forecast

Instead of being 13 below, it will be a "balmy" 5 degrees at kickoff today.  The forecast has been slightly improved for the wild card game between the Packers and the 49ers but it's still going to be COLD!  The stadium is giving out free hand warmers, coffee, and hot chocolate.  not the coldest game at Lambeau

polar vortex

That's what they're calling the wave of cold air that is to descend on us.  We are in for temperatures that could go as low as -70 with the wind chill.  Schools in Minnesota are closed on Monday thanks to Governor Dayton.  With these extreme temps, it is critically important that if you need to go outside, you go prepared.  It only takes a few minutes for frostbite to set in.  Any exposed skin is in danger.  polar vortex

rescue ship stuck

The Chinese ship that helped rescue 52 passengers from a Russian ship has now found itself stuck in the ice.  It had ferried all of the passengers by helicopter to a second rescue ship that would take them to Australia and arrive mid-January.  That ship is now waiting in open waters to see if it's help is needed to free the Chinese ship.  They will try to break themselves free today.

more from Phil

He's at it again.  Well actually this was before his hateful comments from a couple weeks ago.  Back in 2009 he made a video where he encouraged men to marry girls when they are 15 or 16 because by age 20 they won't pick your ducks; only pick your pockets.  How much more of his nonsense do we have to listen to?  I'm all for free speech but for goodness sake, why is this guy a role model?  What I've learned is that I can say anything I want, no matter whom it hurts or how hateful it is, as long as I use the Bible as my reasoning.  Phil

rescued

The ship is still stuck in the ice but the passengers have been rescued.  All 52 were air lifted to an Australian ship and will arrive in Australia mid January.  The crew will remain on board.  They've got plenty of supplies and are in no danger of sinking.  safe

a sign from heaven

Students from Saint Rose of Lima School in Chula Vista, CA released balloons before Christmas with notes attached.  Each note contained a Christmas wish from a student and it was hoped that the notes would reach the North Pole.  One balloon landed in a parking ramp just miles from where it was released.  Terry Hardin found the balloon with Joie's note attached.  His mother's name was also Joie who had passed away in 2012.  Terry felt his mother's message and after some research, found which school had launched the balloons.  He and his wife fulfilled Joie's wish and delivered a Little Mermaid doll to her at school.  message received

plus-sized Barbie

After years of Barbie being criticized as being unrealistic, a new Barbie may be coming to the store shelves.  A plus-sized Barbie will show what it's like to be a curvy woman in today's society.  There are some criticisms for the new doll as well.  Hopefully some middle ground can be found because a plus-size Barbie may just be what our girls need to give them self-esteem for their own bodies and to realize that it's ok to be different.  Barbie
