no lunch for students

An Elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah, has made national news for throwing away lunches because students didn't have enough money in their accounts to pay for it.  About 40 students had their trays taken away when they got to the checkout for the lack of funds.  They were then given a piece of fruit and a milk instead.  The school eventually apologized but also said that it is their policy.  We've also got that policy at the school where I work but I have never followed it.  I am the nutrition secretary and in charge of the accounts.  I will not deny a student their lunch even if their accounts are negative.  Could I get fired?  Certainly, but I'll go with my head held high.  lunch thrown away
